Yellow-eyed penguin, Enderby Island : Subantarctic Islands
The incredible yellow-eyed penguin are the rarest species of the penguin world and are one of the shyest I have encountered in the wild. There are thought to be less than 5,000 of these penguins in the world. Featuring yellow eyes (of course), these penguins roam inland to nest in coastal bushland and shrubs. Their Māori name is hoiho meaning 'noise shouter', referring to their shrill call made at breeding sites.
