Hail to the king

King Penguin, Macquarie Island

There is something special about the King Penguin. Living up to their namesake, they are truly the royalty of the penguin world. This King Penguins is preening his/her feathers to ensure their coat is in top condition to keep warm. This is an extremely important behaviour for penguins. Using their beaks, they spread oil produced from their glands across their plumage to stay clean, well-oiled and waterproof.
