Ross Sea, Antarctica
I was photographing a colony of Adelie Penguins in Antartica’s Ross Sea, when all at once hundreds of Skuas took to the skies. These adorable penguins have to be ever alert with these predatory birds around, because they will target the young Adelie Penguin chicks (of which there are thousands). I can’t help but wonder if these land-locked penguins ever fantasize about taking off and flying away themselves?
Instead, they are left to waddle around an otherworldly landscape of snow, ice and giant icebergs. But still, once they are in the ocean, that is when they can also truly ‘fly’ in their own way.
